Task 2.1. World War Z

World War Z opening Scene.
At the start of World War Z we start with a high angle view looking down at the car’s which are on the road by this we know that they are stuck in a traffic jam as none of the cars are moving which also tells us that this may have been done for a reason.

After that we get questions of the mother to the child which is done non-diegetic this is because by when the first speech we see “does it life in the jungle” this can be ironic to later on in the film because on how we then see on that there is a zombie’s in the film which we know that it could be ironic to this. Also when this is happening we see the mother happy when she says it then we go onto the child which we get a close up of her to see the facial expressions of her which is possibly to show on how scared she is and maybe that she possibly knows something on what the other’s don’t know.

While this is all going on we can hear on that there is a non-diegetic  sound of a helicopter going on which you can hear as if there are multiple which then immediately signal’s danger in the film and we know this because on how we get a medium shot of inside of the car which then we can see all the family and how confused they are because on how many helicopters they are which we can tell that they might already assume that they are in danger.
After this we then start to here a non-diegetic sound of a siren happening and at this point we get the character’s point of sight by this we see what the character is seeing and in this case scenario we see on that we see the taxi pulling out however we can hear the siren’s going at the same time.

Also at this point we can see on that people seem to be in a hurry even though it is blocked which could represent on how much people are in danger to come however just don’t realise it.

After this we can see
on that a close up of the man in the car who has not yet been identified however we have a close-up shot of him which he looks like he is worrying and by this in the background we can almost see the shadow of a helmet which I have circled which show’s that people are in a rush and something bad is going to happen.

After this when see the window-mirror of the car which has a mirror inside of it however by this what we see is that there is something in the reflection however at this point we don’t know what the it is however we assume something is going to happen to the window-mirror which then gets smashed up and we get a close up of that.
We then get the same picture as the start with the traffic jam however this time we see on that people are starting to manic and all walk one way this is a bird’s eye shot and is used to show the surroundings of the area of which they are in.

After this we then see the man in the car get out and by this we get a long shot of him coming out of the car we then see on that he is then confused on what is happening and that he is possibly starting to panic about the situation of what is happening because it isn’t an everyday thing on which this then happens. Meanwhile while this is all happening we can hear that there is more and more siren’s and helicopter’s going on which is non-diagetic sound because we cannot hear it.

After this when he walk’s about and see’s nothing wrong we then see and hear an explosion happen which we then know on that there is danger and we see this by the long distance shot of the explosion happening which we know that something is happening.  At this point we can also see on what is happening around and we can see on that the sky is going dark which is normally used by director’s to show something bad is going to happen and maybe to represent that a evil horde is coming.

By this time we then see on that people start to panic and we can start to hear people scream and the camera pan’s to the left to see the people running on which we can see their facial expressions on their face and which we can also see that they are running from the danger.
This could of also be done by the director to show the facial expressions on the actor’s and on how people want to just do anything they can to stay alive by just running.
We then get another police officer telling them to stay in their car which we then know that something maybe possibly coming towards them however at this point we get a over the shoulder shot and by this we can see on that the expression of the police officer and how scared he is however we also know at this point on the view on what they are feeling in the car as if we are in the car with them and feel the tension and danger on what is about to happen.  While this is also happening we also hear on that there is a truck moving pretty fast and also in the direction on what they are moving which we then know by the next scene when we get a close up of the man then flying through the air when getting hit by the truck.
We then get the closeup of the truck while is pans to show on a path on which they can follow with the truck however we also get a glimpse of a shadow on the truck which look’s  as if it is a person.

Later on in the film we then get a backwards track by this we know that they are moving pretty quick and that they are also getting followed also by this we can then see the people who are chasing them which we can see that they are being chased by other humans however we don’t know what they are.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

You have made a reasonable start Jamie - using lots of media language and often discussing the meaning of the elements you have picked out. However your work needs more detail and lots more images and videos so at the moment this work is at a level 2. In order to improve you should:

  •   Think about the questions below, ensure you are addressing all of them.
  •   Embed JPEG images and a video of the opening in order to illustrate your     analysis
  •   Check your spelling of 'Diegetic'

Study the opening sequences of any film from the Thriller, Horror, and Romantic comedy genre. E.g. Seven, The Dark Knight Rises, Halloween, Notting Hill, Love Actually etc. Analyse how the sequence has been constructed through its use of: Camera angles, shots, movement, Editing, Sound, Special effects and Mise-en-scene etc.
· In terms of editing how have the separate images been put together - Think in terms of frequency of cuts, fades in/out, jump cuts, dissolves etc.
  • · What visual images appear on screen throughout the sequence? And what do they mean?
  • · Describe what narrative (story) is being displayed in the sequence from start to finish.
  • · Describe what kind of music; diegetic/non-diegetic/incidental/ambient etc. is being played over the sequence.
  • · How and what titles are being displayed during the sequence and in what order.
  • · What kind of characterisation is evident? - Age, gender, relationships etc.

Task 2.1Misery analysis

Misery Film analysis:
At the start of the film we see on that the first thing up is the title text introducing everything for the film and we see that it says “in association with NELSON ENTERTAINMENT Presents” by this we see that the director is the first individual to be mentioned after Nelson Entertainment in the credit’s showing that this film is being sold more on his name rather than the actors who are in this film.
After the director’s name disappears what we can next here next is non-diagetic sound of a type write, before the scene is in view this could be ironic to later on in film.
Next after that we see on a close up on a rolled up cigarette and a match this could symbolise danger in his life to come we know this because on how when lit a cigarette can turn dangerous same with the match.
Also next we see on that a wine glass close up however in this one even though the background is blurred out we see someone in the background using a typewriter which we assume is the owner however when we see a wine glass we normally associate with it with a female however in this case scenario it is a male which is strange to see.
Next we see an extreme close up on the champagne in ice they have done this as an extreme close-up maybe representing on that it is the end to something good because champagne is used as a celebratory drink.
We then have a extreme close up on what the man is typing on the typewriter which then ends and then it zoom’s out to a medium shot showing us on what the character is which we then know it is a man and also we know on that he is checking his work by when we see his facial expressions.

We then have a close up of him pouring the champagne into the wine glass and also him smoking his cigarette by this we know that he is celebrating his finished work on his own which gives us the idea on that he is passionate about what he does and it till’s us more about the character also possibly meaning because he isn’t drinking with anyone that he is a lonely middle aged man.

Task 2.1 The Dark Knight analysis:.

The Dark knight opening scene analysis.
Establishing shot used at the start to show on the area where it is to give the audience an idea on what it would be like at the location and what is happening on that current day. –lasts for 20 seconds.
Action type music – showing that something is going to happen when the camera starts to zoom into a building – builds tension within the audience.
From when we see the breaking of the glass and the clown mask’s we know that we are looking at the perspective on the attackers in this case scenario.
Over the shoulder shot used to show on how many people are in the car going to the bank heist.
Close up on one of the clown’s face to possible show facial expressions of the mask before he gets killed by his friend.
Extreme close up on the grenade being strapped to the civilian showing us on that we should know who the character is as he is one of the characters who would do that- (joker) – even though we cannot see behind the mask.
One of the clown’s slides across the floor in a cartoonish way which could be symbolic because on how he is a clown and their normally found in cartoon’s
Close-up on the 2 clown’s when they are being shot- the way he nods his head show’s us on that there is fear in the character however that he is the leader because on how he is giving the other one a command.
Same music is repeated from the start when the bank manager is shot meaning on that when he tilt’s his head that he is back in control of the situation.

Close up on the jokers face symbolising on that tension on what the audience receive once his true identity is revealed and put’s the audience at a shock.

Point of view
Bird’s view as if he don’t belong in location – bird is a eagle representing danger and it is also the American symbol therefore meaning of the food chain.
Contrapuntal
The music is Contrapuntal meaning on that it doesn’t fit in with the scene making the audience think that it is happy and that nothing won’t happen however doesn’t fit in when he is about to fall off the edge.
Close up to face.
Done to show whom the actor is playing the character in the film and also so that it is used to show facial expressions of the character e.g. what he is like.
Music
Mission impossible type action / spy music gives the idea of the genre of the film and also gives us the idea of that what the film is going to have in it.

Eagle Sound

Eagle sound happens everyone when a point of view then happens
Close up on glasses.
If they have a hidden meaning behind them in the film later on – something the character is known to have for disguise because it is a action / spy film.
Intertexuality of man in helicopter
Gives us the idea of that the film is like other film’s which have the same genre with people in suits.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

A great Prelim Task Jamie, it looks like you had fun! The evaluation is also detailed and shows some understanding of the techniques you have used. In order to improve you should:
Change 'eyeliner match' to eyeline match please!
Add the questions so that I know when you are moving on to the next one.

Level 2/3 border.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

As Media Preliminary task evaluation:

What is the 180 degree rule?
The 180 degree rule is a for example if you was to be against a wall and recording from the left side you then wouldn’t be able to record from the right side as to the viewer it wouldn’t look right meaning on that you cannot cross the barrier of the half-way point of you and the camera between.
We also done the match-up action shot which means that we took multiple shots for example we took a long distance shot and then also we also took close up shots and then we edited with adobe premiere to then cut it out so that we have it continuous and that we go from a long shot into an extreme close-up. This is often used to focus on a object on what is meant to centre of the long shot. An example on what we done of this is that we have done is a phone showing a phone call happening of the extreme close up a person dialling a number and then having a conversation with the person.
Another technique was the eyeliner match, which is the shot on which we done which shows that the actor is looking at something and then the next shot of the item However we didn’t use this in our primary task.
In our Preliminary task we replicated shots on what we done which we then put into the film to attempt to do which I think that we done very well on trying to replicate the shots meaning on that we then was able to then put the shot’s into our preliminary task. We also took into consideration when was doing the preliminary task to then use the 190 degree rule in our film.

When we rule when filming a video or a movie it mean’s on that you cannot cross a certain area of the camera was editing the shot and everything we found on that Adobe Premiere would be very good to use when editing our film and is it reliable and easy to work with in the production in our film and is very easy to find guides on how to possibly use the program and also to be able to then such things as green screen which we also may use in our film. Also with using multiple shot’s it gave us practice on shot’s and also gave us practice on how to use the camera.
